A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral. --Leo Tolstoy, Russian novelist (1828–1910)

Beauty is pain

I'm sure almost everyone knows that companies often test on animals but what many don't realize is how many companies get around admitting that they do this. Many people have been fooled by these lies. Companies who don't test on animals can be owned by bigger companies that do. Often times when you are purchasing makeup from a company that is "cruelty-free" you are still contributing to a company that does test on animals. Other companies claim that they would only test on animals if they were required by law. There is only one country that actually requires this, China. If a brand sells makeup in China they are going to be testing on animals.

Now to get down to some specific brands. This list doesn't even come close to all of them, just a few that I was shocked to find out tested on animals when I got into veganism.

Tarte doesn't test on animals themselves but they were bought by a bigger company who does. Many makeup users who actually care about animal testing haven't realized this. If you are buying Tarte cosmetics then you are giving money to a company who gives money to their parent company who then spends it on more animal testing.

Burts Bees and NARS are owned by parent companies that test on animals. MAC used to be cruelty free but their parent company chose money over cute little bunnies and decided to start selling MAC in china. The same company owns Clinique. Benefit surprisingly enough also tests on animals even though their website says they don't. EOS sells in China so therefore they have to test on animals. Bath & Body Works isn't cruelty free even though their packaging says "not tested on animals."

Urban Decay used to be cruelty free but they were bought out by L'Oréal. L'Oréal does preform animal testing so again by purchasing Urban Decay products you are contributing to the exploitation of animals. Their website does still say that they are against animal cruelty because of how easy it is to get around the system. The Body Shop is another company that got bought by L'Oréal and claims to be cruelty free while their parent company tests on animals.

The website that I found the most helpful when switching to this lifestyle was http://logicalharmony.net/. They are very good about informing people on brands that are actually 100% against animal testing. Definitely check it out!
