A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral. --Leo Tolstoy, Russian novelist (1828–1910)

Natural Grocers is the greatest

I don't eat that many fake dairy or fake meat products but when I do I get them from Natural Grocers. They have an almost endless supply of vegan options.

When I do eat fake dairy and meat I almost always get the same things. All of their fake mac-n-cheese dishes are super good. I also like their Tofu and Tofurky options. Pretty much everything their is delicious.

I mostly just eat fruits and vegetables and they have the best. They also have a shelf in the corner of older fruit and vegetables that are super cheap for obvious reasons. Love it!

Natural Grocers is my absolute favorite place to buy food. I totally recommend it to everyone, even to non-vegans. Go in and check it out!

How to transition into veganism

Yesterday was world vegan day. I posted a little blurb about it on Facebook and was happy to see a handful of comments from people considering transitioning into veganism. Most of them wanted to hear my tips on becoming a vegan.

For me I just went for it. I cut everything out of my diet all at once and I was perfectly fine. I know many people struggle with this. It seems like a lot to cut out at once.

I have compiled a small list of my tips for transitioning into this lifestyle.

1. You need to stop worrying about social disapproval.

In my opinion the number one reason that people don't go vegan is because they are worried about being judged by others. Some male vegans I know get teased by their carnivorous friends for not being "manly." If you ask me it shows way more strength and wisdom and "manliness" if you're not partaking in the slaughter of animals. Don't focus on belonging. Don't base your life decisions on the opinions of others. Veganism is all about love and compassion and you will meet so many kindhearted people down the road.

2.  Stop focusing on inconvenience.

Another reason people don't live this way is because they look at all of the inconveniences surrounding it. Sure you have to order differently at restaurants. Sure you can't always eat everything your friends are eating at a party. So what? Are you really going to let "inconveniences" run your life? I hope not. I always eat before I go out with my friends. I basically pregame meals and it works out great.

3. Have your reasons figured out before jumping into veganism.

If you don't truly educate yourself on the meat and dairy industry, you will not see the harm in going back to eating that way. If you take the time to truly understand the dangers surrounding meat and the role it plays on our bodies, the environment and the animals it will be really difficult to go back.

I kept this short because the process is different for everyone. Sometimes people find it easier to go vegetarian and then switch to veganism. Some people, like myself, just go for it. Whatever route you take I promise you won't regret it. Thank you to everyone who chooses a compassionate lifestyle!

Vegan life hacks

I'm sure you've seen life hacks all over Pinterest and Facebook. They're a very common thing. Here are some tips that have helped me out since going vegan.

1. Egg replacers

You can still bake things and make them vegan. It's actually super easy. You can replace eggs with applesauce, bananas, flax seed, or chia seed. They're all simple and your food will come out great.

2. Is It Vegan?

Is It Vegan? is an amazing app. You can scan the barcode on any item in the store and it will tell you if it's vegan or not without you having to read the label. This would be really helpful to anyone just getting into veganism.

3. Coconut oil

Enough said.

4. Nutritional yeast

Nutritional yeast tastes like cheese! You can put it on anything to give it that cheesy taste and as the name states, it's very nutritious.

Celebrities you didn't know were vegan

A lot of people seem to assume that all vegans are just hippy weirdos. There is this stereotype that we are extreme and just plain odd. This is totally not the case. I bet you didn't know that some of your favorite celebrities choose to live this lifestyle.

Some famous vegans include:
  • Miley Cyrus
  • Carrie Underwood
  • Tobey Maguire
  • Natalie Portman
  • Ellen Paige
  • Alicia Silverstone
  • Ellie Goulding
  • Ellen Degeneres
  • Jenna Marbles

Now I wouldn't normally talk about veganism like it's just some trend. It's way more than that. It's backed by ethical views and values. I doubt it will really make a difference or impact your lifestyle but I think it's still interesting to hear about these influential people being vegan.
